My first book The Way Science Works – which I co-authored with astronomy and children’s author Robin Kerrod – is a highly illustrated introduction to physics and chemistry for children aged around 9-14. There are five main sections: Looking at Matter, Atoms and Elements, Forces and Energy, Heat and Sound, Light and Colour, and Electricity and Magnetism.
The Way Science Works was published by Dorling Kindersley in association with the Science Museum in April 2002, and contains over 60 experiments for budding young scientists to try at home. I demonstrated some of these experiments during the launch event in Ottaker’s bookstore at the Science Museum in London, and was helped by plenty of enthusiastic volunteers from the audience! I also gave the same talk with demonstrations and audience participation for patients at Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London.
In May 2003, The Way Science Works was shortlisted for the Junior Prize in the Aventis Prizes for Science Books. The pictures below were taken at the Award Ceremony at the Science Museum on 25th June 2003. They show (first image below) my co-author Robin and I collecting our award from broadcaster Carol Vorderman and Chief Executive of Aventis UK Pierre Chancel, and (second image below) Robin and I with the other shortlisted authors for the Junior Prize (from left to right): Nicholas Harris, Nick Arnold and Tony de Saulles, Sally Hewitt, myself and Robin, Dr Frances Dipper (the winner) and Sholly Fisch.
